Ban For Drink Driving Salisbury Student

A 22-year-old woman has been banned from the roads at Salisbury Magistrates court after being caught drink driving in a car she was not insured to use.

Police officers patrolling the city on February 13 at around 11pm saw a stationary vehicle near a roundabout, and then watched the driver attempt to reverse and then stall.

Speaking to the driver, officers said they smelled “intoxicating liquor” leading them to perform a roadside breath test. The test proved positive with 67mcg alcohol per 100ml breath.

Defending the woman, Richard Griffiths described her as of “previous good character”. While she was insured to drive her own car she had borrowed the Peugeot seen by officers from a friend because one of her headlights was broken and she needed to get home.

Mr Griffiths continued to say that his client believed she would be covered by third party insurance, adding: “She was wrong. It isn’t a case of taking the risk, it is a case actually of misunderstanding the small print of the policy of insurance.”

Regarding the drink driving offence, he told the court: “She is not a large person and well under nine stone and of course had two glasses of wine. That would probably mean an individual of my shape would not have been over the limit but a girl of [the defendant’s] size and weight it does.”

He asked for these circumstances to be taken into account by the court when it came to sentencing.

Magistrates banned the woman from driving for 17 months as well as imposing fines and costs totalling £297. The ban may be reduced on completion of the driving driving rehabilitation course.
