Drink Driver Loses Licence and Dream Career

A 28-year-old man has lost his chance at pursuing his dream job of becoming a firefighter after being convicted of drink driving and receiving an 18-month ban.

Magistrates in Burnley heard that the company director crashed while drink driving and had to be cut from the wreckage of his car by the very service he wished to join.

The accident occurred at around 2am on Saturday 15th April outside the Anchor Inn, Salterforth, and the man was rushed to hospital in Preston, thought to have suffered life-threatening injuries.

Blood tests revealed him to have 170mg alcohol per 100ml blood. The legal limit is 80mg. He suffered a broken jaw and a broken eye socket.

Speaking for the prosecution, Carl Gaffney explained that the defendant had expressed his shame and remorse in a letter to the court as he entered his guilty plea.

“He is shocked by his behaviour and he fully takes on board the seriousness of what he has done. The consequences of this will prove a real challenge in the future.”

Selina Akhtar, mitigating, said that her client, with no previous convictions, had been out drinking and watching the Grand National with friends.

He had originally intended to walk home, but for some reason instead decided to drive.

“Thankfully it was a quiet time of night,” she said, adding: “It could have been a lot worse.”

Ms Akhtar also added that her client had wanted to become a fireman, but his conviction for drink driving would prevent him from doing so, thus causing him a great deal of upset.

“He has not had a drink of alcohol since this incident,” she said.

After pleading guilty to driving without due care and attention and driving with excess alcohol, Magistrates banned the man from driving for 18 months, fined him £368 and ordered him to pay £85 costs.
