A drug-driver who was chased at speeds of up to 100mph through Leeds after failing to stop when ordered has been jailed for twelve months – to be added on top of a six-year sentence he is already serving.
Robert Williams sped away from police officers when they tried to pull him over on the M621 slip road.
Prosecutor Robert Galley told the court how, high on cannabis at the time, Williams re-joined the motorway at speed before exiting and running through a red light, as well as others as the three-mile chase progressed.
Video footage also shows him overtaking other vehicles at speed, driving on the wrong side of the road, and forcing a pedestrian to leap to safety as he attempted to escape police at speeds of up to 100mph, including doing 90mph in a 40mph zone.
The pursuit came to an end when a police car deliberately collided with Williams’ car as he attempted to drive down the exit ramp of the A64. The car spun and he was arrested when it came to a halt. He was also found in possession of cannabis.
Williams’ solicitor Alan Armbrister described it as “a truly awful piece of driving”.
Williams started a 6-year jail sentence in December last year after pleading guilty to charges of conspiracy to supply cocaine and money laundering. He had previous convictions for possession with intent to supply cannabis, possession of cocaine, and driving while disqualified.
At the time of the chase in October last year, he was on bail awaiting sentencing on those charges.
Judge Simon Phillips QC banned Williams from driving for two years in addition to adding a further 12-months to his jail term. He will need to take an extended retest in order to get behind the wheel legally again.
