Reports are in as to how 2 police forces are planning house roadside equipment which will detect if a driver is using a mobile phone whilst driving.
Thames Valley and Hampshire Police issued a joint statement as to how the equipment will be used as an “enforcement tool”.
Officers have also said the equipment is aimed at raising awareness to the dangers of using a mobile phone whilst driving.
The equipment, developed by Norfolk based company Westcotec, works by detecting 2G, 3G and 4G signals. If the sensors register a driving is making a call, sending a text, or using data within a vehicle a sign will flash ahead of them at the side of the road.
The police say the equipment will not engage should the driver be using a hands free system, however, it will not be able to distinguish between a passenger using their phone and the driver.
Westcotec managing director Chris Spinks said: “Our system is designed to provide intelligence to police officers so that they can carry out enforcement activity in order to reduce the amount of people who are using mobile phones illegally on our roads.”
