A new survey, conducted by Vantage Leasing, has shown how almost 2.5 million drivers think it is still acceptable to use their mobile phone when behind the wheel of a vehicle.
This continuing trend flies in the face of Department of Transport reports showing how every year there are 400 accidents on the roads in the UK where using a mobile phone has been a contributory factor.
In an effort to combat mobile phone usage, 2017 saw the introduction of new laws that increased the penalty for offending drivers rise from 3 penalty points to 6 and a fine of £200.
James Buttrick of Vantage Leasing said: “Driving while using a mobile phone causes more than one accident a day in the UK, so it is worrying that a sizeable number of Brits think it is acceptable.
“Indeed, it only takes a split second while texting or talking on a mobile phone for the driver to become distracted, with particularly devastating consequences.”
Of those polled, 20% backed a custodial sentence for the offence whereas 25% suggested the penalty should increase from 6 points to 9.
